    Why you'll love this recipe

This casserole is a one-pot wonder, which means minimal clean-up.

Low net carbs with all the flavors of a traditional Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

There are so many ways to serve this recipe. Opt for keto-friendly tortilla chips to enjoy your casserole "nacho-style" by scoping up the cheesy goodness with these chips.

    Key ingredients

Ingredients to make Philly cheesesteak casserole set out in different sized bowls and dishes, including olive oil, minced garlic, tomatoes, sliced raw steak and chopped peppers and onions.

Sirloin Steak - Select a good quality sirloin steak that is well-marbled.

Beef Broth - Choose a low-sodium beef broth to control the overall saltiness of the recipe.

Worcestershire Sauce - This is a signature ingredient in Philly cheesesteak recipes. Don’t skip it!

Provolone Cheese - An even layer of this cheese results in a delicious golden-brown topping.

If you have any questions about this easy casserole recipe, please leave a comment below and we will get back to you.

    Variations

    • Instead of sirloin, use other cuts of tender beef like ribeye steak or flank steak. Ribeye is extra rich and even more marbled. Flank steak is a little leaner.
    • Swap out sliced steak for lean ground beef. Brown the ground beef before layering.
    • Add sautéed mushrooms to the vegetable mix.
    • Bring some heat by mixing in sliced jalapeños or red chili flakes.
    • Embrace the true Philly experience by adding chopped pickled hot peppers, or cherry peppers to your casserole.

How to make this Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Cast iron skillet with strips of sirloin steak being cooked.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat half of the olive oil over medium-high heat in an oven-safe skillet. Add the thinly sliced beef; season it, and saute it until browned.

Cast iron skillet with tomatoes, onions and bell peppers being cooked.

Step 2: Remove the steak and set aside. Add the onion and bell peppers to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 3-5 minutes, until softened. Add in the garlic and cook for 30-60 seconds.

Cast iron skillet with the steak added back to the cooked veggies.

Step 3: Stir in the broth and Worcestershire sauce. Return the beef to the pan, then layer the American cheese on top of everything.

Cast iron skillet with melted cheddar cheese mixed into the beef and veggies.

Step 4: Cover the pan and simmer, allowing the cheese to melt, then remove the lid and stir it into the beef and veggies. Reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer until the sauce thickens.

A layer of provolone cheese on top of the cheesesteak ingredients in a cast iron skillet ready to be baked.

Step 5: Sprinkle the top with chopped tomatoes, then sprinkle or layer on the provolone cheese. You can also transfer the mixture to a casserole dish at this point.

    Expert tips

When cutting the steak, aim for thin slices. Thin slices ensure the beef cooks quickly and evenly in the skillet and casserole.

A quick sear is enough, as your steak will still be heated in the oven. Do not overcook while browning it in the skillet.

Make sure to broil for the last 2-3 minutes. You need that broil element to achieve golden and bubbly result.

We like to rest this casserole dish before serving it. This allows the cheese to cool which makes serving and cutting easier.

    FAQs

Can I make this cheesesteak with other cheeses?

Provolone is the most popular choice for a Philly. But if you want to try other cheeses go with ones that melt well like cheddar, brie, mozzarella, Swiss, or blue cheese.

What can I serve this Philly cheesesteak casserole with?

We like to pair this meal with something green like a broccoli salad or zucchini noodles. You can also use keto rolls and make an actual sandwich.

    Storage instructions

Once fully cooled, refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Reheating in the oven is the best option for this dish. Preheat your oven to around 350°F (175°C). Cover the dish with aluminum foil to stop the top from browning or drying out too quickly. Reheat for about 15 minutes.

Reheat on the stovetop with a little water or broth to the bottom of the pan to create steam and prevent sticking.

You can use the microwave to reheat if you're short on time. The texture will not be as crisp as when reheated in the oven.

It's worth noting that this Philly Cheesesteak Casserole doesn't freeze well. Freezing can alter the texture of the cheese and vegetables upon thawing and reheating.

    • Add the thinly sliced beef; season with salt and pepper to taste and saute until browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.

    • Store any leftovers in an airtight container.  This will prevent it from drying out and keep the flavors locked in. Store in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.
    • Reheating in the oven is the best option for this dish. Preheat your oven to around 350°F (175°C). Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil to stop the top from browning or drying out too quickly. Reheat for about 15-20 minutes.
