Both keto waffles and keto pancakes are made regularly at our house, usually on Sunday mornings. We alternate between the two breakfast foods, and always like to have fresh berries on the side.

    Why you'll love this recipe

You need 8 simple ingredients to make these keto waffles, and I'm betting that you already have them.

They have a light sweet flavor and the perfect crispy outside and fluffy inside.

There is no cheese. Many recipes add cheese, but we find the texture and flavor to be off. Save the cheese for chaffles.

With only 4 grams of net carbs, its a breakfast that easily fits into your keto diet.

    Key ingredients

Ingredients needed to make keto waffles. All in individual bowls.

Eggs - This easy keto waffles recipe isn't heavily egg-based like some are, but you do need a couple of eggs to help everything come together.

Vanilla Extract - The flavor of vanilla smells so good when making your waffles!

Granulated Sweetener - We suggest using Swerve or one of Lakanto's granulated options.

Heavy Cream - Most waffle recipes call for milk, but cream works just the same and has way less carbs.

Baking Soda - This common baking ingredient gives the waffles a bit of lift, keeping them fluffy as they cook.

    Substitutions

Dairy free - Replace the heavy cream with canned full fat coconut milk.

    Variations

Fresh Berries are delicious with waffles. We will sometimes mash them a bit to make them nice and juicy. Then we top the waffles with Keto Whipped Cream.

We love blueberries! They are our favorite keto-friendly fruit. To make blueberry keto waffles, fold in about ½ cup of whole fresh berries to the batter before cooking it.

Chocolate: add chocolate chips to your batter or on top of your waffles. Use melted chocolate to take it to another level of decadence.

Chopped nuts: Pecans or walnuts go great as a topping. Sprinkle them on then pour some sugar-free syrup, yum!!!

For extra energy in the morning, try these chocolate and almond keto energy bites.

    How to make keto waffles

Heavy cream, water, sweetener, vanilla extract and eggs being whisked together in a glass bowl.

Step 1: Preheat your waffle maker while you mix the batter. In a medium bowl, mix together the eggs, vanilla, sweetener, heavy cream, and water.

Glass bowl containing keto waffles batter that has been fully whisked together.

Step 2: Slowly add in the almond flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thick, and likely thicker than a traditional waffle flour.

Step 3: If needed, spray the waffle iron with oil or drizzle with melted butter. Pour about ½ cup of batter into the waffle maker, spreading it out so that it cooks evenly.

Step 4: Cook the waffles for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

    Best tips

Batter consistency: This waffle batter should be thick, but not so thick that it seems like cookie or biscuit dough. If needed, you can add additional water, a tablespoon at a time to get the right consistency.

Perfect crispiness: When making a batch of waffles, we'll have the oven set to 175F degrees. After removing from the waffle iron, we'll place them in the oven while we make more. This keeps them crispy until all are cooked.

For baked goods like our keto vanilla cake, bread, and waffles, finely milled, blanched almond flour is the best choice.

    FAQS

Do I need to add sweetener to the batter?

We like the sweetness that a bit of sugar-free sweetener adds, but it's not necessary. You can leave it out and these waffles will still be completely delicious.

Can I substitute coconut flour in this recipe?

No, coconut flour will not work for making this recipe. Coconut flour absorbs moisture much more than almond flour does, and won't make a very good waffle batter using this method.

Are these waffles the same as chaffles?

This keto waffles recipe is not the same thing as a chaffle. Chaffles are waffles made from cheese and eggs. They are so customizable and can be used a sandwich bread. Give our Keto Chaffles recipe a try.

    Can you buy keto waffles?

Stores are carrying pancake mixes and in the freezer section. Currently there is one brand in particular that I've seen, Birch Benders Keto Waffles.
While you can likely enjoy these toaster waffles on your keto diet, they are kind of expensive, coming out at around $1.00 each.

two plates with keto waffles topped with pats of butter and with blueberries on the side

    Storage instructions

Allow your waffles to cool before storing in the fridge. Place them in an airtight container and store for up to 5 days.

Frozen Keto Waffles are super convenient, and just like those toaster waffles that you ate as a kid! To freeze these, cook them on the waffle iron first, then place the waffles on a sheet pan to freeze them separately. After an hour or so you can remove them from the pan and place them in a zip-top bag in the freezer.

To reheat frozen waffles, use the toaster, toaster oven, or air fryer to get them crispy again. The microwave will work too in a pinch.
