Many people don't realize how easy it is to make homemade whipped cream.

We've been making this recipe for years using only heavy whipping cream, a sweetener, and vanilla. It's the perfect filling for a sweet almond flour crepe.

    Why you'll love it

Heavy cream is naturally high in fat and low carb.

This homemade whipped cream is delicious enough to eat with a spoon or serve with fresh berries or keto desserts.

We like to add a dollop on top of Keto Hot Chocolate in the winter and our Keto Berry Smoothie in the summer.

    Simple ingredients

Glass measuring cup filled with heavy cream, a bottle of vanilla paste and a bag of swerve sweetener with a stand mixer behind them.

Good quality heavy cream, vanilla extract or vanilla paste, and sugar free sweetener, such as Swerve are all you need to make this light, decadent topping.

    Substitutions

Sweetener: For this recipe I used Swerve. I've also used Lakanto maple flavored syrup in this recipe and liquid stevia.

If you use Lakanto maple flavored syrup you can do a one for one swap with the Swerve sweetener.

If you use liquid stevia, use 1-2 drops, adding 1 drop at a time until you reach the your desired level of sweetness.

If you don't like your low carb whipped cream sweet you can leave it out entirely.

Cream: Full fat coconut cream can be used in place of heavy whipping cream for a dairy free keto whipped cream.

How to make keto whipped cream

Stand mixer bowl with heavy cream, sugar free sweetener and vanilla extract, unmixed.

Add your cold full fat heavy whipping cream, sweetener, and vanilla to your mixing bowl.

Whipped cream on a stand mixer beater above a bowl of whipped cream.

Beat on medium high speed until it thickens. Approximately 7-8 minutes.

For the complete list of ingredients and instructions, please see the recipe below.

If you don't have a standing mixer with a whisk attachment you can use a hand mixer.

I have never made keto whipped cream by hand with a whisk, but I have seen it done!

    Expert tips

Keep an eye on your mixer as the heavy cream begins to thicken. I recommend monitoring until the desired consistency is reached. Walking away from the standing mixer can result in homemade butter instead of light and airy whipped cream.

Using powdered sugar free sweetener yields a well blended end product.

    How to store

Store covered or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

If you do not add sweetener, it will begin to separate sooner. It is best enjoyed by the next day.

To freeze, pipe or dollop your leftover keto whipped cream onto a parchment paper-lined sheet pan to freeze. Once frozen, transfer into an airtight container or ziplock and freeze for up to 90 days.

These single servings of frozen whipped cream will thaw within 8-10 minutes at room temperature.

    Variations

    Flavor notes to try:

Two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa (please note, this will add 2 net carbs)

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon of pumpkin spice extract instead of vanilla extract

1 teaspoon of mint extract instead of the vanilla extract

Keto whipped cream is incredible on Keto Coffee and Keto Pumpkin Spice Lattes, if you're looking for a low carb indulgent treat.

    Is whipped cream keto friendly?

Yes, whipped cream is keto friendly if you leave out the sweetener or use a sugar free sweetener. Most recipes only call for a small amount of sugar.

    Is cool whip keto friendly?

Traditional cool whip has a small amount of sugar in it. Cool whip also makes a sugar free cool whip version.
Both are considered keto friendly, but please remember all the added ingredients in cool whip, it is a processed food not a whole food.

Yes, just a couple of drops should work. Add more if you like it sweeter.

Thanks for giving the amounts for liquid stevia. I can’t use Erythritol. Severe issues with it.

I just saw glasses baking of your damn cake. Would it work with the thicker Choczero maple syrup? Should I thin it out? I can’t use Erythritol

I haven't tried using any types of sugar free maple syrup to make my keto dump cake. You can use liquid stevia though. I'd start with 6-8 drops.

Can you freeze it to make a sort of frozen ice cream substitute?

Yes, and you can add different extracts for different flavors. For example, recently we added peppermint extract and froze it for a creamy peppermint "ice cream".

Yes, you can use powdered monkfruit sweetener instead of swerve. Use the same amount 🙂
