This easy guacamole would pair PERFECTLY with our carne asada. We love adding a dallop to chipotle chili as well.
Why you'll love this recipe
Truly, it’s that easy to make guacamole. For equipment, it’s traditional to use a large mortar and pestle.
But if your avocados are ripe, a bowl and a fork will work great. You will also need a cutting board and a knife for chopping the other ingredients.
Guacamole is kid-friendly and can add excitement to almost any meal. And because it’s so easy to make, feel free to invite your kids to join in on mashing the avocado.
The base of guacamole is creamy, ripe avocados. Any type of avocado is great, but we find Hass avocados to be the creamiest.
It also pairs well with Cucumber Salsa or our Air Fryer Jalapeno Poppers.
Recipe Ingredients
Avocados- It’s important that you use ripe avocados for this recipe. You can determine the ripeness by color and feel.
Cilantro- Cilantro is a staple of South American cuisine. It adds freshness and complexity.
Red Onion- Red onion should be chopped finely, as it has a strong flavor. It adds the perfect addition of assertiveness and spiciness.
Lime Juice- The lime juice is another staple, and adds the needed acidity for any creamy dish to balance it out. You can use bottled lime juice, but fresh is always best.
Salt (optional)- This is optional, but gives your guacamole a taste, and add salt if you feel it is needed. Start small and add a little at a time.

How To Slice An Avocado
- First, use a knife (chef’s knife ideally) to slice it in half lengthwise. You do this by inserting the knife until you feel the pit, then rotate the avocado around until it is cut into two halves.
- Rotate the two halves to separate the avocado, and pull apart. Then set the avocado half with the pit down on a cutting board, cut side up.
- Insert your knife into the pit, and you can use your thumb and index finger to push the pit off the knife, with your hand resting on the flat edge of the knife.
- From there, scoop the flesh of the avocado into a bowl and it is ready to go!
Best tips
Use ripe avocados. Under ripe avocados have a skin that is light green and feels firm. They will be too difficult to mash and taste bitter.
Ripe avocados have dark purple skin and feel soft. Overripe avocados have black skin, and feel mushy.
If you have avocados that need ripening, can place them in a brown paper bag for a day or two with the bag closed.
You can also set them next to a bunch of bananas, or place inside the brown paper bag. Bananas let off a natural plant hormone called ethylene that triggers the ripening process.
This recipe is great for parties and can easily be doubled or even tripled.
Feel free to add other ingredients to the guacamole if you wish. Some great add-ins are fresh hatch green chilis, jalapenos, fresh salsa or Pico de Gallo, or cumin.
Can I use Frozen Avocado?
Yes, you can use frozen avocado to make guacamole, but you'll want to defrost it first. Also note that frozen avocado can be quite bitter in flavor, and it may change the flavor of the guacamole.
But if you have a brand of frozen avocado that you love, then feel free to use it.
Storage instructions
Guacamole is best served right away at room texture, but can also be made ahead of time for gatherings.
To store guacamole, smooth out the surface into a container until flat and squeeze lime juice over the top until there is a thin layer. This will prevent browning.
Place a piece of plastic wrap over the guacamole and press down until completely covered. Add a lid and store in the fridge for up to 48 hours.
To freeze, add the guacamole to a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Let the guacamole thaw in the fridge overnight the day before you plan to use it.
