I put together this resources hoping to answer questions about juicing and share some of my favorite juicing recipes.
When juicing, you have full control over what ingredients to use. Not only is juicing a great way to mix up your diet, but it’s also a fun and creative way to meet your nutrition goals.
Juicing recipes can be as sweet as you like them, or not sweet at all. Mix up the fruits and veggies to switch up the flavors. You can also make savory juicing recipes with vegetables and spices, like pepper and cayenne.
What is Juicing?
Juicing is where you run fruits and vegetables through a juicer to extract the juice from fresh fruits or vegetables. The liquid contains most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) found in the fruit, but juicing tends to remove the fiber.
Some believe that juicing is good for you because it allows your body to absorb the nutrients better and it gives your digestive system a rest from digesting fiber.
However, there's no scientific evidence that extracted juices are healthier than the juice you get by eating the fruit or vegetable itself.
Do I need a Juicer for Juicing Recipes?
Having a juicer makes it easier to juice in our opinion because you can remove more of the pulp, but you certainly can use a blender and strainer bag.
Once you pick your juicer out, make sure to read the manual so you know how it works and most importantly, how to clean it!
We scored a basic juicer at Good Will for $10. It came with a manual and we love it.
I recommend borrowing a juicer or buying a less expensive juicer to start, to make sure you like it before you fully commit into more expensive equipment.
Juicing for Beginners
If you are just getting started with juicing, you'll want to make sure you pick out an easy juicing machine, or ensure your blender is high powered and you have a cheesecloth to remove the pulp.
You'll want to start with easy recipes, or even just start with one vegetable or fruit at a time, to understand how your juicer work.
With all the fruits and veggies in season year-round, you should never run out of juicing recipes.
Some fruits and veggies don't work well in a juicer, so make sure to follower the manufacturing guidelines in your juicer manual, so it doesn't jam up.
Also, always make sure to clean it properly after you're done, otherwise the pulp will dry out and stick to parts on your juicer.
Juicing Recipes Tips
For the best flavor combinations, use a recipe until you have a good idea of which fruits and vegetables go well together. I’ve included some of my favorite juice recipes for beginners below!
Try to use as many vegetables as possible. Too many fruits will make your juice too sweet.
We love using other spices and herbs when we make savory juices. Parsley is one of my favorites, along with a little basil, but you can also add cilantro, mint, dill, and thyme.
Buy your fruits and veggies fresh and wash and prep a few days ahead, to save time. Just store your chopped produce in the fridge until you’re ready to juice.
Juicing Recipe FAQs
What's the best time of the day to juice?
Juicing can hydrate and energize you for the day, so it's best to get started in the morning. There are some people who can't eat or drink too early - so really, any time you juice is good. There aren't any rules around it.
For those that are doing a juice cleanse, the earlier in the day you get started, the better so you have time to get all your juices in for the day.
How much juice should I drink?
It really depends on the person and what their goals are. Some people may have a hard time digesting juice at the beginning, so it’s best to start with a smaller amount, like 4 ounces. Then, you can work your way up to 16 ounces or more a day.
If you're recovering from an illness or injury, you might want to start with 16 ounces to speed up getting extra vitamins' into your body.
What are the benefits of juicing?
This really depends on who you ask. One of the benefits is getting additional vitamins into your body. Juicing also helps to hydrate you.
Some people use juicing recipes as a way to lower their calorie count while working towards weight loss.
Some say juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immune system, remove toxins from your body, aid digestion and help you lose weight, but there isn't really any long term studies that have proved that.
Really, it's about how it makes you feel.
How long does fresh juice stay good in the refrigerator?
Fresh juice usually stays good for 2-3 days in the refridgerator. If the water separates from the rest of the juice, give it a little stir or shake before you enjoy it.
What do I do with the pulp from vegetable juicing?
You can discard it, or use it your garden compost. If it’s carrot or apple pulp, you can add it to muffins. If you have chickens or pigs, add it to their feed.
